44) SLEEPING POSITIONS

What was the first thought that came to your mind when you saw the topic title? Did your heart skipped a beat? Before you continue reading, please clear your naughty mind........

A little excitement in the morning is good for our hearts, if you know what I mean. No doubt, "sleeping positions" has a double meaning, well, perhaps to some of you but my topic for today is about how you sleep by yourselves and what the position that you adopt says about you.

Sleeping position and what it says about you

Your sleeping position

If you tend to curl up in a foetal position, you are described as tough
on the outside but sensitive at heart. You may be shy when you first meet somebody, but will soon relax.

This is considered the most common sleeping position, adopted by 41% of the 1,000 people who took part in a survey. More women as men tend to adopt this position.

Log

If you lay on your side with both arms down by your side. You are easy going, social people who like being part of the in-crowd, and who are trusting of strangers. However, you may be gullible.

The koala and lion are not sleeping in the "log" position but they are sleeping on one.

Yearner

Do you sleep on your side with both arms out in front? You are said to have an open nature, but can be suspicious, cynical. You are slow to make up your mind, but once you have taken a decision, you are unlikely ever to change it.

Soldier

Some like to sleep on their backs with both arms pinned to their sides. The people who sleep in this position are generally quiet and reserved.

They don't like to make a fuss, but set high standards for themselves and others.

Freefall

Are you the type to lay front with your hands around the pillow, and your head turned to one side? You are considered often gregarious and a brash person, but can be nervy and thin-skinned underneath,  don't like criticism, or extreme situations.

Starfish

Lying on your back wrapping both arms up around the pillow. Sleepers like you make good friends because you are always ready to listen to others, and offer help when needed. You generally don't like to be the centre of attention.

The remainder of those in the poll said the position they fell asleep varied or did not know.

What is the sleeping position that has effects on your health?

The following positions may have a good or bad effect on your health.

1. Freefall position

The good side
  • Promotes digestion.
  • Suitable for snorers. Keep the upper airways more open
The bad sides
  • Wrinkles as pressure is put on your face by the pillow.
  • Sagging breasts.
  • Stiff neck and shoulders since the spine is not in a straight position.
  • Tired arms. Arms that are outstretched for long periods can cause muscle and nerve fatigue due to restricted blood flow.

2. Starfish and Soldier positions

The good sides
  • Backache and neck pain sufferers  will benefit from this position.
  • Those who tend to get acid reflux. Sleep with the head slightly raised.
  • Minimize wrinkles on face.
  • Maintain firm breasts.

The bad sides
  • Are more likely to lead to snoring and a bad night's sleep.
  • Lying flat means that stomach contents can more readily be worked back up. into the mouth. To counter this, keep head elevated.

3. Sleeping sideways

The good sides

  • Prevents neck and back pain.
  • Less snoring.
  • During pregnancy for better blood flow.
  • Keeps spine elongated.
The bad sides

  • Wrinkles as pressure is put on your face by the pillow.
  • Sagging breasts as the ligaments are stretched.

4. Fetal Position

The good sides
  • Less snoring.
  • During pregnancy for better blood flow.
The bad sides
  • Neck and back pain
  • Wrinkles as pressure is put on your face by the pillow.
  • Sagging breast as the ligaments are stretched.
  • Not suitable if you suffer from arthritic back or joints.
  • Restricts breathing.
If you tend to sleep in this position, try not to tuck your body into an extreme curl. Just straighten out a little bit.

Furthermore, the research also found that most people are unlikely to change their sleeping position. Only 5%  of those who took part in the research said they sleep in a different position every night.

I am the common foetal sleeper. What type of sleeper are you?

MY ART CORNER
102 Year Old Man

Interesting fact: This is a portrait of a 102 year old Chinese man who was a farmer. He started working at the tender age of four. He had huge hands on a frail body. He told the photographer that he will never stop working.

I think he must have had many a good nights sleep to be able to live so long. What do you think?
