60) CAFFEINE FACTS, TRUTHS AND MYTHS

There was an eccentric elderly man who lived a few doors away from my childhood home. 



His daughter was a primary school teacher who gave tuition lessons.  I used to walk over in the evenings to attend classes. One day, he was in a chatty mood. After our session finished, he beckoned some of us over and asked if we knew how he kept his teeth white. We tried a few guesses but failed to get the correct answer.  With a solemn face, he said, "Every morning when I wake up and before brushing my teeth, I will gargle with a cup of freshly brewed coffee!" Wait a minute! How could coffee make the his teeth white? 


While we were cracking our head to figure out how, this old man put his fingers in his mouth and pulled out a full denture set,  showed it to us with a toothless grin!  Needless to say, we all broke out laughing.  When we were twelve years old, we wear our innocence on our faces, don't we?  Our legs get pulled....a lot.

Myth: Decaffeinated Coffee and Tea are caffeine-free.

Truth: Decaffeinated coffee and tea still contain a small amount of caffeine.
During the decaffination process, only 98% of the caffeine is removed.


Myth: Consuming caffeine can deplete bone density.


Truth: A research was conducted and it was found that there was no direct link between decreased bone density and high caffeine intake. Another study was done by the Mayo Clinic showed that even though there was a marginal increase of calcium excretion in the urine, caffeine is not a crucial risk factor for osteoporosis.

Myth: Coffee can cure a hangover.


Truth: Caffeine or any other thing for that matter, will not help someone to sober up.


Other facts about Caffeine

1.Caffeine is considered a psychoactive drug.  It stimulates our central nervous system.

2. Caffeine is a widely used behaviorally active drug all over the world.


3. Taking too much caffeine can cause withdrawal symptoms such as headaches, fatigue, difficulty concentrating and drowsiness.


4. A low daily dosage of about 100 mg can cause significant caffeine withdrawal symptoms.






5. To counter caffeine withdrawal symptoms, gradually lower your caffeine intake may lessen the effects. However, a sudden drop of 100 mg can trigger the effect.


6. Caffeine can remain in our body system for at least 5 to 6 hours. People who are sensitive to caffeine may even feel the effects much longer.


7. Caffeine is naturally found in over 60 plants species.


8. Adult Americans-80% drink coffee everyday.


9. In US, an adult will consume 280 mg caffeine on a daily average. That is about 3 cups a day per person.


10. The British are well known for drinking tea and in total, they will sip 1.96 million cups a day!

Some people I know seemed to have a very high tolerance for coffee. They can drink a strong cup of coffee at night and have no problem falling asleep. After 3.00 pm, i f I were to drink even half a cup of coffee or tea for that matter, I will suffer the consequence of being wide awake, blinking like a night owl at the ceiling until 4am before I could finally nod off.  Are you the former or the latter?
