An all over body scrub in a posh spa can set you back a few hundred dollars.  What if you can spend not more than $50 on a fancy body scrub instead?

All you need to get is just plain old salt or sugar, some body oil and a nice, warm bath.  Not only that this homemade scrub works well even on the face.

Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: 10 minutes

Here's the method

  1. To scrub your body, use salt or sugar.  Sugar can be gentler on the

skin.  Select a sugar or salt that has small granules so that it won't scratch or tear your skin.  Normal table table salt or sugar works beautifully. If you have very sensitive skin, you might consider a dark brown sugar which has a softer texture.
  2. What type of oils to choose?  You can use baby oil or any of the following: organic extra virgin coconut oil which you can buy at a health food store, almond oil, safflower, vegetable.  Olive oil will also make an excellent oil for homemade scrubs too.
  3. Measure 1 part oil to 2 parts sugar or salt. Place about a few tablespoons to a cup of salt or sugar in a container. Pour in half that amount of oil. Mix with a spoon. Usually the salt will separate and settles to the bottom.  Oil,  salt or sugar don't mix.
  4. If you prefer your scrub to smell divine, just add 5 drops of an essential oil into your mixture. Mix with spoon. Check out the essential oils here: 41) LIST OF ESSENTIAL OILS FOR SKIN.

  6. The bath.  Scrubs are effective if used on dry skin. Step into a bath tub and put on a pair of loofah mitts.  Or you can get exfoliating gloves from any health food stores. They are really good for scrub your skin clean. Otherwise, your bare hands can do the job too.
  7. Put a spoonful of the mixture into your palms or your gloves. Start by rubbing the mixture all over your body in a circular motion. For areas where the skin are thicker and tend to be dryer, such as the knees, soles and elbows, spend a little longer scrubbing time.  You can also cut a lemon in half and pour sea salt on the halves, scrubbing your soles, elbows and knees with the lemon which acts like a pumice stone. Thinner areas such as the chest, neck, and stomach, use a lighter hand when scrubbing. Try using a cleanser on a washcloth to exfoliate. If you feel that the salt is too abrasive on your skin, wash off the bath mitts. Then spoon only the oil onto the mitts to continue.
  8. Once you have scrubbed the entire body well, do rinse thoroughly with luke warm water.
  9. Pat skin dry. You should feel invigorated and cleansed. The salt (or sugar) should have removed all dead skin with the help of the loofah and the oil should leave your skin silky soft and moisturized. You don't even need to apply moisturizer.
  10. Make sure to thoroughly clean up your bathtub from the oils that can accumulate at the bottom which can get slippery risking a fall.
