Scientists say that our genetic make up is one factor that is not within our control. However, our genes only govern 30% of how quickly we age. 70% are other factors that we ourselves contribute to accelerate ageing.
What other factors that make us age?
One of the reasons why wrinkles form on your face is how you sleep every night. If you sleep on your stomach or side, pressure will be put by the pillow. Over time, facial wrinkling will develop.
2. Feeling stressed.
4. Lack of oxygen.
2. Feeling stressed.
Stress and worry makes you frown more causing the muscles on your face, neck and shoulders to get tensed. All the muscles in these 3 areas are interconnected.
The longer they stay tensed, the more likelihood for wrinkles to form on the forehead, cheeks, side of the mouth and neck.

When you are under stress and worry, you will have difficulty sleeping. Not having a good nights rest causes eyebags and dull, sagging skin.
4. Lack of oxygen.
We tend to shallow breathe when under stress or feeling negative emotions such as anger, frustration, irritability. Breathing deeply is vital to bring fresh oxygen into our bloodstream.
With insufficient oxygen, our cells do not get enough oxygen to maintain the moisture and hydration which in turn causes dryness of the outer skin. Over time, wrinkles will form.
5. Smoking
Smoking constricts our arteries causing less oxygen being delivered to our skin cells resulting in skin dryness and loss of moisture.
6. Poor Diet
When we eat food that are rich in saturated fat and salt, caffeine and processed food, it depletes our natural body moisture resulting in accelerated ageing.(Read: Are you addicted to junk food?)
Long hours spent in these environments will increase dryness to our skin as well as causing wrinkles to form due to lack of moisture and dehydration.
Discoloration of the skin which is also known as pigmentation is caused by the increase in melanin production which is the body defense mechanism to protect the skin from the heat and strong sunlight.
So how can we reverse or slow down the effects of aging? Read my next topic for discussion, "How to reduce or prevent wrinkles".
