HAIRSTYLES FOR ROUND FACES

Apparently, there are thousands of us out there who are endowed with a round face and searching for what hairstyles look great on us.

Wonderful news for all you ladies who are born with a round face shape is that your face shape tend to age well! This is according to celebrity plastic surgeon, Dr. Tony Youn on MSNBC.  He explains, "Women with rounder faces, typically are much slower to show their age than women with longer faces, since they tend to retain the fullness and softness of youth."

Here are some trendy hairstyles for round faces you can try if you are thinking of a change.

Love this look on Adele.  A flattering shoulder-length hair like this is suitable for all face shapes because the length is just right.

Pixie cuts may not look great on round face shapes especially if it is cropped too close to the head like a cap as it can accentuate the roundness.  However, this cut in particular is splendid on Alicia Quarles because added lift at the top of the head helps elongate a round face.

Rules are meant to be broken as it is proven by Cameron Diaz with this bob cut that look fantastic on her.  Usually bobs are not that great on round face shapes.  Why does it look so good?  Well for one thing, her side swept bangs add angles to her style and her hair is very straight so that it does not add width to the sides of her head.  The beautiful blond hair color helps to enhance the hair further.  Going this short is not for the faint hearted and if you have a round face.  So do it if you dare.

If you are considering getting bangs, the side swept bangs are best bet for women with round faces.  However, blunt cut bangs sported by Christina Ricci here would work too.  Just make sure that the bangs are just sweeping the brows.

A super flattering cut on a round face. The best part is that this style will grow out beautifully. The key to round face shapes with short hair is to keep it straight so it doesn't add body (and volume) to the sides of the face.

 Emma Stone

Long hair looks gorgeous on round faces simply because it lengthens the face.  The best length to choose would be the cut that falls a few inches below the chin or longer. Emma Stone's cut bareley touched her collarbone and the hai rends are not quite blunt or layered.  The bottom inch has been snipped vertically by her hairstylist.

Ginnifer Goodwin

It is tricky to pull of a short haircut if you have a round face shape.  The reason is this-short cuts add width to the sides of the face and you should avoid that.  Stay away from jaw-length bobs.  More so if you are blessed with a short neck.  Any kind of blunt cut at the chin will bring out the roundness even more. And we don't want that, do we?

If you really want it short, one solution is to make sure that you have layers cut in, such as seen on Ginnifer Goodwin that has an edgy short haircut.  Why does this style work for Ginnifer who has a classic round face?  The longer bangs actually gives definition to her gorgeous delicate features. Short hair should press flat against the sides of the head and Ginnifer's hairstyle has a lot of layers cut in, which is a definitely must for a round face.

 Jenna Ushkowitz

Glee's Jenna ushkowitz has a round face and she also has a natural wave in her hair.  You can consider growing shoulder length hair or even longer.  Then air dry it, scrunching  as it dries.  This trick allows your natural wave to come to shape.  Play with your hair, twist it, pin it back or braid it to the sides and pin it back.

Jennifer Hudson

Oscar winner, Jennifer Hudson has a natural round face and her bangs perfectly complement her feminine, delicate features.  The key to achieving the right bangs on a round face is undoubtly the cut. You may ask for a "graphic, curved shape...and be sure bangs are thick.  Do you notice that Hudson's bangs here are shorter in the middle and longer on the sides?

Kate Bosworth and Stella McCartney

Both these girls have classic round faces.  Though Kate Bosworth is sporting a great hairstyle for her face shape and Stella McCartney's pulled back ponytail only brings attention to her facial flaws.  Very few women can pull off this look, that is, to wear their hair slicked back into a ponytail.

Keri Russell

If you have a round face and curly hair, it's best not to cut hair chin-length because it accentuates the roundness. This cut is just long enough, but would look even better on a round face if allowed to grow out a few inches. Keri Russell's curls have been tamed here, her natural hair is much curlier. If you have a round face, tame curls by wrapping hair around a large-barreled curling iron. This creates bigger curls, rather than the small spirals.

Kristen Dunst

Kirsten Dunst's face is naturally round and both the above hairstyles work very well for her.  Although, the  hairstyle on the right is a better bet on her as it makes her face appear less rounded.

The reason why the left hairstyle works also on Kirsten is this. Bobs are usually not the hairstyle of choice for women with round faces as it brings attention to the round shape.  However, you can pull it off  with a fairly long bob like what Kirsten has here.  Just make sure that the length of the bob hits at least a couple of inches below the chin and not an exacting style.
Now, the right hairstyle works better on Dunst is again,  the length.  Long hair draws the attention away from the fullness and instead elongates a round face.  The way her hair falls like a curtain, it actually help to hide some of the softness of Kirsten's face.

Mandy Moore

A great hairstyle if you have thick coarse hair. Just remember to avoid growing this style in the same length.  Layer cut around your face will add definition and remove thickness.  Otherwise, you may run the risk of resembling a walking Christmas tree hair!

Why this look works on Mandy Moore who also has a classic round face.

Having long layers is universally flattering on any woman and for women with round faces, it's a great pick.  The layering makes the face look longer.  Wavy hair can als cover the roundness too.

Mila Kunis

Mila Kunis definitely has a round face and often wears her hair strainght, long or wavy. This style is flattering on a round face because long hair covers the sides and fullness as well as creates the illusion of length in the face.  The straight hair also does not add body to the sides of the face. In fact, the effect is a great way to slim Mila's roundface.
A not about center parting. "If you want to wear a center part, the way to make it work for a round face is to have hair a few inches past your shoulders with layers that hit at the jaw," says hairstyle Chris McMillan in Allure Magazine. " Get your stylist to cut in a bit on the sides to create subtle angles."

If you love curls it can also works great with round faces as long as the wave begins below the lips. Again, remember not to add add width to the sides of the face.

 Here are some tips:
  • If you have curly hair, the length of your hair when dry should be longer than your chin. Having layered cuts prevents fluffiness the "triangle" look where the ends spread out like a Christmas tree.
  • If you can, select a stylist who has skills in cutting curly hair and curly hair should be cut when it is dried because the stylist can then see how the curls fall naturally.
  • Thinning out the fullness is a must or you may have the option to straighten your hair by using relaxers.  The other choice is to tame your curls into gentle waves using curling irons.

Olivia Munn

Shoulder length hairstyle are always a staple for all face shapes.  It is casual and looks great on women with round faces like Olivia Munn.  The last thing you want to do if you have a round face is add fullness to the sides of your head. If you have naturally wavy or curly hair, cut in layers to weigh it down and make sure to grow it a couple inches or more below your chin.

Soft curls or waves are super flattering to any face shape if you have long hair. This is a gorgeous hairstyle on round face shapes. As long as your hair has some natural wave in it, you should be able to get this look.

Tori Spelling

A round face looks really good with an uneven cut, meaning a mix of lengths," says hairstylist Chris McMillan in Allure Magazine. You have to be careful with bobs on a round face. Your head can appear rounder with a cut that's all one length or that falls at the jawline or above it. Your best bet is the uber-popular "long bob." Long bobs are usually at least 2 inches longer than the jawline and flatter a round face because of the length.  If you have fine, straight hair and a round face, this long bob as seen on Tori Spelling is a great hairstyle option that looks wonderful flat ironed or curled (Tori's hair here is curled by winding hair around the barrel of a curling iron).  For a more modern bob, make sure the back of the cut is shorter than the front and the ends have texture and are wispy. Texture and an angle add interest to what can be an otherwise boring bob.
