Most women with straight hair will be jealous if you are born with natural curls. Women with straight hair including me would be willing to spend hours sitting in the hair saloon for a perm or using curling iron at home to try to replicate what you have.
However, some of you were born with very curly hair. Hair that exasperates you because it is coarse, frizzes easily and just won't stay in place the way you want it to. And you try your best to keep your hair from getting wet from the rain like a plague because water will bring out the worst from your hair and it can make you look like a drown rat which has just been electrocuted. Not a good look to walk around in public with.
Here are the secrets to styling curls
Secret No. 1 - Let your curls be free
Dreading humidity and frizz, you spend long hours with the flat iron, tugging and pulling and making your curls as straight as an arrow.
But the moment you step outside and it starts to drizzle, all that hardwork will come to nothing because your hair will curl and annoyingly be transformed into a fuzzball.
What are you going to do? Well, simply don't straighten it. Let the curls be.
What are the benefits?
- Going natural keeps your hair healthy.
- You have more time to do other things than to spend it on straightening your hair.
- You will stand out from the crowd of straight haired women.
Secret No. 2 - Go straight? Of course you can!
With the help of chemicals and some elbow grease, you can get the straight look. Nicole Kidman has natural and very curly hair but when she steps out on the red carpet, her hair is as straight as a ruler.

Get your hairstylist to recommend the type of treatments that will suit your budget and hair texture. The solutions used are very similar to perms except that it is specially designed to straighten instead of curl your hair.
Secret No. Three - Buy a Ceramic Flat Iron
Invest in a good flat iron. Make sure it is made of ceramic as it will take less time to straighten your hair and also it will not burn your hair in the process.
If you don't have a diffuser, point the blow dryer nozzle and dry in the direction that hair grows.
Of course, your hair will become a big poof but you can rinse out the next morning when you get up.
Brushing your hair will resolve frizz, dryness, split ends or even hair thinning. Just remember to use a natural bristle brush to do the job.
Comb through or massage into hair with your fingers.
Secret No. Four Don't allow frizz to frazzle you!
Having curly hair is one thing but to live in a humid climate adds to your woe because, curly hair tends to be dry and very sensitive to humid air. It will soak up the moisture and this will result in the cuticles to expand, which causes frizz.
The secret is to give what your curly hair needs and that is to moisturise, moisturize, moisturize. Look for hair products such as non-sulfate shampoo, a leave-in conditioner, a deep conditioner and a styling product that is silicone base. All these products are essential to keep your curls moisturized or give protection to the cuticles.
Secret No. Five: Deep Conditioning
If you have dry, frizzy and dandruff hair, stay away from products that contains alcohol. Treat hair to a deep conditioning hair mask at lease once a week.
Another option is to use natural oils such as neem oil, olive oil, jojoba oil or coconut oil. Take just a few drops and massage with your fingers into your scalp and hair. Brush the oil through your hair with a natural bristle hair brush, wear a shower cap and leave it overnight. Wash out the oil the next morning.
Secret No. Six - How to blow dry correctly
After washing your hair, it's best to allow your curls to air dry as long as possible. Then use a diffuser to blow dry. Hold the blow dryer under hair, cup, don't squeeze the curls in your palm up and gently fold the hair like an accordian while you dry hair.If you don't have a diffuser, point the blow dryer nozzle and dry in the direction that hair grows.
Secret No. Seven: Keep your brush
Don't brush curly hair is a myth. Brushing your hair for 2 minutes every night actually helps stimulates the natural oils from scalp to hair and makes it smoother, more manageable, less frizzy, softer and shinier.Of course, your hair will become a big poof but you can rinse out the next morning when you get up.
Brushing your hair will resolve frizz, dryness, split ends or even hair thinning. Just remember to use a natural bristle brush to do the job.
Secret No. Eight - How to apply products correctly
Most of us would apply products to the top of our heads which can end up weighing down our hair. Switch to applying products from the back of your hair since it is thicker. You can then work the product through the sides and then lastly at the top of the head.Comb through or massage into hair with your fingers.
Secret No. Nine - Use Hairbands or Head scarfs
The next time you are running late and have not time to do your wet curly hair, pull your hair back with a hairband or scarf. It's a foolproof way to keep your hair flat at the crown leaving the ends to curl. A colored scarf acts as an accent to your outfit if you are wearing a solid neutral color. It will also keep your hair neat while it drys.
Later, when you remove the hairband or scarf, your hair will have just enough bounce and body.
Secret No. Ten-The right cut
Getting the right haircut is crucial if you want a manageable curly hair. Remember to avoid bangs, longer hair works better than shorter and you don't have to go to a specialist for a good cut.
