Right off the bat, the answer is, "No, there is no such thing as a zero calorie food."

Water and diet beverages are calorie free but they are not counted as food.  Therefore, the myth some diets claim that can make you lose weight through 'zero calorie' or 'negative calorie' foods is truly busted wide open.

How busted?

All foods contain calories apart from foods that have been engineered to be calorie free such as sugar substitutes.  Although some foods may contain very few calories and we still have to burn those few calories by chewing and digesting the foods we eat.  Eating certain foods that can put us into a negative calorie balance sounds too good to be true.

According to one expert,  eating foods do need energy to digest.  However, to digest these foods that are considered 'zero-calorie such as zucchini and broccoli will not make much difference to your calorie count or losing more pounds.

Fruits and Vegetable Salads

Foods that are sometimes declared as being zero-calorie or negative-calorie include
fruits such as:

Apples

Grapefruit

Lemons

Mangoes

Vegetables such as:

Asparagus

Broccoli

Beets

Cabbage

Carrots

Cauliflower

Celery

Cucumbers

Garlic

Lettuce

Onion

Spinach

Turnips

Zucchini

If you really want to get your body to work hard at cancelling the calories, you would have to eat a ridiculously large amount of these foods that,  you have to ask yourself if it is really worthwhile or does it make sense?

It does - only if you have two stomachs like the cow!

The upside of eating these foods

That being said, it does not mean that you should not eat these foods at all.  Calories are not an issue as they comprise of fruits and vegetables which are great foods that your body needs to survive healthily.

How great are fruits and veggies?

These foods are also
  • packed with fiber and essential nutrients.
  • Fruits and vegetables tend to be "water dense," meaning that they contain relatively few calories and high in moisture.
  • They can help you maintain your weight or lose excess weight.
  • Fruits and vegetables are filling just like higher-calorie foods, but with far lesser calories and has  lots more bulk.
If you are trying to lose weight, these tips are what you can do:

  • Half of your plate should have vegetables,
  • snack on fruit when you have a craving,
  • stuff your sandwiches with fresh vegetables, and
  • have fruit instead of dessert after your meals.

Your body will not register it as a calorie deficit, but instead it can help you feel full and satisfied with no worries about adding extra calories besides getting your daily dosage of vital vitamins, minerals, and other essential nutrients.

Whatever diet that you are on or not, the one true "zero" beverage  is to make sure you are getting enough of is, water and preferably, warm water.   Substituting water for sugar-sweetened beverages can prevent you from taking too much calories as well as it keeps you healthy. The ideal daily intake of water is usually six to eight eight-ounce glasses of water.
