From the time we were born to the time we die, every aspect of our lives have stages. I call these stages the wonder years, the carefree time, a transition period, the stressful years and the twilight zone.
The Wonder Years(Ages 0 to 11)
Babies want food, sleep and comfort. These basic needs are instantly satisfied by loving mothers. Toddlers and pre-adolescents spend time playing, laughing, crying, eating and sleeping. They have no worries. Maybe an occasional fight over who gets the last chicken drumstick for dinner or tussle over a favorite toy. The motivation is to learn while playing and have fun. Holidays and birthdays are special days to look forward to. Life is filled with new discoveries, excitement and fun.

Carefree Time (Ages 12 to 19)
Time passes and the adolescent reaches puberty. I consider this stage as life altering. The body starts to change. Girls begin menstruating, grow breasts and get pimples. Boys will grow facial hair and their tone of voice becomes deeper. They begin to notice girls. If you ever wondered why teenagers feel strong and invincible during this time, it is the high levels of estrogen and testosterone hormones flooding their young bodies. The fearless ones throw caution to the wind by doing daredevil stunts or foolish acts. A typical teenage life is filled with homework, exams, school activities, sports, puppy love and over protective parents. The motivation can be to excel in school, be popular, have a special someone or become a rebel without a cause. Life is carefree, no worries or big challenges.
Adolescents |
Carefree Time |
Transition Period(Ages 20 to 29)
Entering their twenties, some continue to paper chase for diplomas, degrees or PHDs. Others enter the job market to earn a living. The motivation can be to have a life better than their parents or an ambition to be a professional or specialist. They have proud, supportive parents. The rest could be school dropouts, jobless or gaining what I call a "squatters status" in their parent's home. They may not have the right motivation to move forward or move out. Life is to seek knowledge and the meaning of life or discover who we really are.
Transition Period |
The Stressful Years(Ages 30 to 49)
Now in their thirties and forties and being full fledged adults, they may face responsibilities and financial commitments. Building a family and home of their own. Maybe even caring for their ageing parents. Reality hits like a ton of bricks. Childhood is just a faded memory. They become anxious, have sleepless nights, overeat or have no appetite. They may start to smoke, drink alcohol or gamble to forget the daily pressures they have to go through. However, it is these habits that can cause health and family problems to surface. Some may successfully duck life's curve balls but most of us may feel that we are running on a treadmill that is going faster and faster. Life sucks!
The Twilight Zone
Stepping into our fifties is a turning point for many. Some of us are still going strong. Others may not be so lucky. We may look at life differently compared to when we were in our twenties, thirties or forties. Some are still running the rat race. Others like myself have retired and getting to do what we love. That for me is art, reconnecting with my friends and writing blogs.
Why do I call this the twilight zone? Well, for one thing, I am just stepping into it and I don't know what is going to happen in the next 10 to 20 years. Maybe I will be promoted to a grandmother, drop the extra pounds or be cholesterol free. Life is like reading a good book. We don't know where the story goes until we turn the page.
One thing for sure. I will blog about it. That is to say, if I am still alive and kicking. Meanwhile, look out for my next topic for discussion, "Do you have high cholesterol?"
