Having my fair share of muscle aches and pains due to sprains, falls and illnesses, I would say that we have to be vigilant about what forms of pain that signals something is wrong with our bodies.

Pain is mainly caused by inflammation in our muscles, tissues and joints.

Learn to recognise these pains and not ignoring them by immediately checking with your doctor can avoid possible complications or underlying problems later on.

5 Areas of pain and what it is trying to tell you

Most people have the notion that aches and pain are just a part of growing old.

Here are the 5 kinds of pain you should pay attention to.

Pain # 1- Joint Pains

  • You have a constant pain in your joints such as the knees, fingers, or hips that is not due to any recent injury.
  • The joint pain is coupled with tenderness due to inflammation indicates a possible rheumatoid arthritis.  Early treatment is required to prevent the condition from getting worse.
  • Other possible serious disorders that are connected to joint pain are bone cancers, fibromyalgia, Tendonitis, Bursitis, Gout, Lyme disease, Lupus, Rickets and Osteoporosis.

Pain #2-Chest Pains

  • A sharp pain in your chest area that does not subside and especially if accompanied with shortness of breath and any abnormal upper body pain, seek immediate medical help in order to rule out a stroke or heart attack.
  • Usually if the sharp pain is felt on the left side of your chest, it could mean you could be having a heart attack.
  • However, if the sharp pain is felt on the right side of your chest, it could be the following causes:

  1.  Angina,
  2.  Lung problems
  3.  Asthma
  4. Pulmonary embolism
  5.  Asthma
  6.  Gallstones
  7.  Pleurisy
  8.  Inflammation of the liver.

Pain #3 Severe Headaches and Pain

It could just be a migraine.  Or, if you have never had a migraine before and/or there is a sharp pain in your head which is not followed by additional migraine symptoms which are usually head throbbing sensation, visual aura or sensitivity to light, you will have to see a doctor immediately.

It may be rare, but a sudden sharp pain in your head could be a blood clot or brain aneurysm that has ruptured which will lead to brain damage, stroke and even your life in which will take only a few minutes to occur.

Pain #4 Sharp Pain in Your Side

If you experience a sharp pain in your stomach area or your side, it could be appendicitis which is the inflammation of the appendix.  This condition is to be taken seriously.

Usually, you will feel a pain in your belly button but the pain will migrate to your right lower abdomen.  When it happens, you will get a severe and sharp pain sensations. Other symptoms that will accompany the pain will be nausea, vomiting and fever.  If no medical treatment is given,  you will then have chills, constipation, diarrhoea and involuntary shaking.

If your leg swells, become inflamed and painful, it may be caused by a blood clot that has formed in one of your veins, deep inside your body.  It is known as deep vein thrombosis or DVT.  Your life will be in danger or can become fatal if the blood clot were to break off and travel to your artery or lungs.

Additional symptoms of DVT may include soreness when standing or walking, increased feeling of warmth around the affected leg as well as red or discolored skin on the leg.

If these symptoms progress to shortness of breath, sharp pain with deep breathing or the coughing up of blood it is imperative that you call for medical help immediately.
