130) TEN BAD THINGS THAT ARE GOOD FOR YOU

The jury is still out about certain food, drinks, activities, or mood that are supposedly bad for you.  Until the next study which hopefully can give a conclusive result that can be backed 
by solid evidence, go ahead and enjoy these 'bad-for-you' stuff and always in moderation.


Sex

From the scientific point of view and if you remember biology, having sex is for the purpose of procreation.  However, they have also found that there are also health benefits when you engage in sex.  It reduces stress, lower cholesterol levels and improves circulation throughout the body.


Of course, you should always practice safe sex to avoid contracting sexually transmitted diseases.


Chocolate

Good news for all you chocolate lovers!  Many studies have found that this delectable treat has a lot of health benefits such as, antioxidant flavonols that can protect you from certain cancers.  It can also keep your arteries from clogging.  

Recently, they have found that these powerful chemicals may even increase blood flow to the brain, and prevent the onset of dementia.

Stick to dark chocolate as it has more polyphenols and the least sugar.   To avoid gobbling up the whole bar in one sitting, break it into smaller squares.  You hit the limit at two pieces a day!  Remember that more is not better.

I know it can be very tempting being a chocolate lover myself but don't just pop the whole piece into your mouth and chew it all up at once. 

Instead, try to nibble slowly, so that you savor the taste, satisfy your cravings faster and you actually eat lesser.





Red Wine

It has long been known that wine, especially red wine has powerful anti-cancer and artery-protecting benefits.  

Resveratrol is found in the skin of red grapes and latest studies shows the effectiveness of this antioxidant ability to reduce gum disease and Alzheimer's.  


In comparison, the skin of grapes are removed before fermenting to produce white wine.  



Studies have found that white wine is less beneficial.







Marijuana


Marijuana or Cannabis is made an illegal drug because of it's addictive and hallucinogenic properties.  However, it is now hyped up to be a preventive drug for Alzheimer's which causes memory loss.  The irony of it is that marijuana is often associated with memory losses!

Recent studies on mice have indicated that anti-inflammatories found in the drug actually deters the clumping of brain proteins, one significant cause of the disease.  

So before you jump on the bandwagon, it is prudent to wait for the scientists to complete a comprehensive test studies on human subjects.





People, lets be clear here. If they should ever legalize marijuana, you can light up only on prescribed medical grounds.  We are not encouraging the usage for "recreational activities."



Maggots


The word maggots automatically makes one squirm.  The thought if these slimy creepy crawlies sends shivers down the spine, doesn't it?  

Don't be in such a hurry to dismiss them as gross, pest or disgusting because maggots can save your life.  The wriggly larvae are science's latest wonder cure.  It was approved in 2003 as the FDA's only live medical device.








When maggots are placed on serious wounds, they will zero in on the bacteria and eat away dead tissues.  In doing so, they help to stimulate faster healing and prevent infection from setting in.



Sunlight

Too much sunlight is bad for you.  How bad?  Well,  it is the cancerous kind.  However,  according to scientist, people who suffer from asthma could benefit from controlled doses of ultraviolet rays.

In some lab studies with mice, sun rays suppresses the immune reactions that can trigger an asthma attack.  Positive results from the findings may in the future be used to treat asthmatic patients.  

Indirect sunlight meaning when you are sitting in a shaded area,  can also boost your mood.  Another study indicated that getting sufficient sunlight can help office workers to avert the feelings of drowsiness in the afternoons.  

However, avoid getting sunburn in the process by always applying sunblock or sunscreen before you step outside.



LSD (Lysergic acid diethylamide)


This is purely for information purposes and by no means are we encouraging you to use this drugs or any other drugs for that matter unless it is prescribed by a certified doctor.

Scientists have discovered that when heavy drinkers were given small doses of LSD, it is thought to help bypass the rock-bottom stage of alcoholism and kept recovering alcoholics on the straight and narrow.

Bases on studies that were done many decades ago,  clinical tests have shown that many patients have not had a drink in many years since.  

Though it is an interesting result, more intensive investigation need to be conducted.  

It was not surprising that a recent study of 36 volunteers who took part in a lab test for a drug similar to LSD reported behavioral changes and hallucinations that lasted for weeks.

Please do not try this at home!

Coffee


Detractors will claim that coffee is bad for your health as it acts as a nerve stimulant and can be addictive.  Advocates of coffee on the other hand proclaimed that coffee is a major source of antioxidant and should be included in your daily diet to help lower risks of diabetes.

Properties in coffee beans are also thought to reduce the risks of developing diseases such as cirrhosis of the liver and pancreatitis.  

This can be construed as good news for all you party animals and alcohol drinkers alike.   Take lots of black coffee in the morning as boosters.  Just be mindful of the sugar intake. And it has not yet been proven that coffee can cure hangovers.

Anger


People who bottle up their anger are an explosion waiting to happen.  Occasional anger fueled outburst was found in studies to be good for the health.  

It can even be a more effective coping mechanism than being afraid, annoyed or disgusted.  Even though anger helps you to release your stress, it is best done in moderation.

Staying angry for long periods of time can be negative as you will be exposing yourself to possible health issues.  The most common ones are raised blood pressure, difficulty in sleeping and diabetes.


Beer


Beer would receive the lowest points when it comes to comparing it to liquors.   Aside from getting a beer belly, new research indicates that moderate beer drinking can actually improve cardiovascular function.  Believe it or not!


Are you harboring hopes that fried chicken will have health benefits in the near future?  Only time will tell or when the cockrel starts crowing every morning, noon and night!

    Food is meant to be enjoyed in moderation. One of the important things that make life worth living.
