14) WHAT IS COLOR BLOCKING?

The current fashion reflects the bright and bold colors of spring.  Color blocking is now in trend.  Fashion aficionados are over the moon because they can have a fabulous time playing with colors for their clothes, shoes, bags and accessories.  Color blocking is about having fun with what you wear when you go out.

No more drab suits or black pumps.  Stiff collars or tight jeans.  The runways are bursting with  striking, contrasting and cheerful palettes.  A feast for the eyes and pockets.

To fashionably pull the look off, one has to first understand a few principles about colorblocking.

Color Play

Pick three colors for an ideal combination.  Here is a color wheel and some tips on how to mix the best colors and create a hot outfit.

Color Wheel for Colorblocking Trend
Color Wheel

Rule of Two-Thirds

This rule is a popular theory for combining colors. Begin by making an equilateral triangle(a triangle with 3 equal sides) on the color wheel.  Then from there, pick two of the three colors that the triangle touches.  These colors will usually be in harmony together and matches beautifully.  A stand out look.  Not for the faint-hearted.

For of you may be too shy or you may not want to mix too many colors, the best way to go is to choose neutrals and it does not always have to be skin tone nudes. Neutrals can be white, black, navy, grey or brown.  Choosing a neon or bold color.  Add one of these neutrals and you are one step into the colorblocking trend.

Some suggestions you can try is:-

  • Cobalt BlueYellowOrange
  • Chocolate BrownPink, Peach
  • PurpleBright Blue, Teal
  • Deep bluebright pink, White
  • Coral, Grey, Ivory
For those who like classic styles, stick to a combination of black and white.  Jazz up your outfit with gold or silver jewelry.

How to maximize your curves

Colorblocking can hide or enhance the curves.  Neutral shades to downplay the parts you want to hide and bold colors will enhance the curves you want to display.

For example, women with wide hips can draw the attention upwards by wearing a bold color top and a neutral bottom.  If you have a Marilyn Monroe hourglass body, wearing a bandage dress with strategically placed colors will emphasize your shapeliness.

Accessorize, Accessorize, Accessorize

The three important words that was drummed into my head by the style guru when I attended a grooming course.   Here is a checklist on how to have a 'put together look'.
